CHICAGO — City officials are celebrating National Drinking Water Week by unveiling a new brand of canned water — Chicagwa.
"From the beginning of my administration, I've made it a priority to ensure that every resident has access to high-quality drinking water," Mayor Lori Lightfoot said. "Together, we've ended water shutoffs for nonpayment and introduced legislation in City Council to protect water affordability. Now it's time to celebrate Chicago's water with a campaign that reminds us of our most precious resource — Lake Michigan."
The limited run of cans featuring six different designs by local artists was unveiled with the help of a rather funny commercial produced by Quality Meats Creative, narrated by Chicago TikTok historian Shermann "Dilla" Thomas and starring a uncredited actor with a decent Chicago mustache.
The city plans to distribute the cans free at events throughout the city this summer. Chicagwa will also be offered around the city at locations starting Wednesday including Kuma's Corner, Real Good Stuff Co., Wiener's Circle, Manny's Cafeteria and Delicatessen, among others.
