LONG BEACH, NY — The City of Long Beach announced today that it was cancelling many of its senior programs until further notice. The city said it is cancelling all senior programs that involve physical activity, starting March 12. The goal, city officials said, is to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. The city listed the programs that will continue: Tech Smart, The Steel Magnolias, Water color Techniques for Beginners, Sunday at the Movies, MLK Center Senior Program. The Wednesday exercises at the MLK Center are cancelled, however. Seniors are especially at risk for serious complications, and even death, due to the coronavirus. There are currently 28 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Nassau County. Officials have not identified where all of the infected people are from, but no cases have been positively tied to Long Beach yet. There are also six confirmed cases in Suffolk County. There are now 1,050 cases of the virus in the United States and , with 29 deaths, according to statistics from Johns Hopkins University. There are 212 cases in New York, bu there have not been any deaths in the state. Nassau County continues to have the highest number of cases on Long Island, now reaching 28. One of those is in serious condition, county officials said at a press conference Wednesday. Suffolk County saw its cases jump overnight, going from one to six, bringing the total on Long Island to 31. There are 232 people in mandatory or precautionary quarantine in Nassau, and eight in mandatory quarantine in Suffolk.
