LONG BEACH, NY — The new coronavirus continues to plague Long Beach, and has lead to a complete disruption in everyday life for many residents of the Barrier Island. As of March 29, there were more than 100 confirmed cases of the coronavirus on the Barrier Island: 79 in Long Beach, 22 in Lido Beach and 19 in Atlantic Beach. There were 6,445 confirmed cases in Nassau County and 59,513 in New York as a whole. NY PAUSE has shut down most of the state. All non-essential businesses are closed, and citizens have been told not to go out of their homes. The order was recently extended until April 15. It's also important to maintain social distancing to stop the spread of the virus, which means staying at least six feet away from other people. Click here for a list of essential businesses in New York.Here's how the coronavirus is affecting life in Long Beach. Schools All schools are closed until at least April 15 by order of Gov. Andrew Cuomo. That order will be revisited and could be extended if necessary. City Services Long Beach City Hall and all other city facilities are closed. The boardwalk has been closed because people were not maintaining proper social distancing. As of now, the beach is still open. However, all parks and playgrounds are closed. All city-run youth and senior programs have been canceled. Businesses All non-essential businesses are closed. But many restaurants are still serving food for delivery and take-out.
