LIDO BEACH, NY — A counselor and a camper at the Town of Hempstead Camp ANCHOR have both tested positive for the coronavirus. Hempstead Town Medical Director Dr. David Neubert sent a letter to Camp ANCHOR families to let them know about the results. He said that anyone who came into contact with the infected individuals was notified. "At this time there is no indication that there is an increased risk to the camp as a whole," Neubert wrote. "Our robust screening system and the active involvement of our medical staff is designed to minimize the risk of exposure to COVID-19 and functioned as designed in these cases. We will continue to actively monitor the situation and take the necessary steps to protect everyone involved with the ANCHOR program." Camp ANCHOR is a Town of Hempstead facility for special-needs children. It normally provides a well-attended summer camp with programs for hundreds of kids. This year, due to the pandemic, Camp ANCHOR was running one week in-person camps and multiple online events for campers.
