Google Acquires Waltham Tech Firm, Plans Layoffs

WALTHAM, MA — Google acquired a Waltham technology firm Monday, shortly after the firm announced it would be firing more than four dozen employees. Earlier this month Google announced it planned to acquire Actifio, which specializes in reducing unnecessary duplication of data. Then on Dec. 5, the company filed a notice with the Department of Labor that indicated by Feb. 18, the company would be letting go of 54 employees. The acquisition closed on Monday. Actifio referred Patch to Google. Google did not respond to requests for comment. The company profile on LinkedIn indicates Actifio was founded in 2009 and has between 200 and 500 employees. It also has offices worldwide, including in England, Australia, India, Japan and China. Google did not disclose how much it paid to acquire the privately held Waltham company. According to CRN, a tech industry news publication, Actifio has raised over $350 million in venture funding and is valued at more than $1 billion. For three years from 2014 to 2016, the Waltham company, which is situated at 333 Wyman St, was listed as among the best places to work in the Boston Business Journal.
