LONG BEACH, NY — Long Beach's first day of school was cancelled today after heavy rains caused flooding across the Barrier Island. The heavy rains caused flooding, which stranded many vehicles, including the district's buses, superintendent Dr. Jennifer Gallagher said in a notice to parents. Buses were unable to get down local roads to pick up students for class. Teachers and staff were also unable to get to school buildings due to the flooding. Gallagher said that some middle and high school students made it to school before the buildings were closed. Those students are being watched by administrators and will be sent home on buses once the roads clear. The new first day of school is tomorrow, which will now have a modified scheduled. Kindergarten through second grade will attend their half-day tomorrow, along with the Green group at the secondary level. The Blue group will have a virtual orientation tomorrow with their teachers. Both morning and afternoon pre-kindergarten sessions will take place tomorrow. Grades 3 through 5 won't attend class until Monday, but teachers wills till conduct orientation for them then.
