MDRRC will host a June Fundraiser as it raises awareness of Life after Lockup through a documentary and a panel discussion.
Imagine if you had paid your debt to society and returned home with no place to live, no job and no money, what would you do to survive? Would you commit a crime? 95% of inmates return home. Every single one of these individuals will have a lasting impact on their community either positively or negatively. Finding strategies that create positive outcomes is critical for reducing future crimes.
Former inmates are often confronted with one pressing re-entry challenge after another, everything from finding a place to live and arranging substance abuse treatment to getting a job. They often find themselves facing the exact same pressures and temptations that landed them in prison in the first place.
A setback in any one of these areas can easily lead to relapse and a return to prison, what public policy analysts call "recidivism," measured by looking at the criminal acts that ex-offenders commit in the three years after prison release. The latest statistics in Maryland reveal a 41% recidivism rate.
Maryland Reentry Resource Center will host a viewing of Searching for Justice: Life after Lockup along with a panel discussion of formerly incarcerated individuals from Maryland. The panel will give you a look into their lives after their release, sharing the challenges and barriers to success that they faced as they returned to their communities. Funds raised will support the work of Maryland Reentry as we work to help returning citizens alleviate the barriers to success.
