LONG BEACH, NY — Incumbent State Sen. Todd Kaminsky declared victory early Wednesday morning over challenger Victoria Johnson, but she said she was waiting for all the votes to be counted. With all of the Election Day and early voting ballots counted, Kaminsky, a Democrat, had a comfortable lead over Johnson, a Republican: 68,911 (53.3 percent) to 60,310 (46.7 percent). Nassau County has tens of thousands of absentee ballots to count, and it could change the results of the election. However, many of those ballots will likely favor Kaminsky, as many more Democrats than Republicans requested absentee ballots this election. "Thank you to the voters of the South Shore for overwhelmingly re-electing me to the State Senate. I look forward to getting to work on behalf of all voters to achieve more prosperous communities, honest government and a cleaner environment. Let's do this together," Kaminsky said in a statement. "This has been the most nasty, divisive time I can remember. Let's start with kind words for one another and open minds. We are better when we work together." With many ballots still to be counted, Johnson did not concede the race. "My opponent has declared victory; however, there are 31,000 absentee ballots that need to be counted," she said in a statement. "Once that is completed, a winner will be declared. I look forward to seeing what the end result is." Nassau County will continue to receive mail-in ballots until Nov. 10. It will be days before the count is completed.
