ATLANTIC BEACH, NY — An Atlantic Beach man was arrested early Thursday morning after police say he set his home on fire in an attempt to kill himself. According to police, officers were called to a home on Erie Avenue in Atlantic Beach at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday because the 53-year-old man sent messages to family members saying he was going to hurt himself. When the officers arrived, police say the man refused to leave his home. He then made several threats, police say, including threats to harm the officers and to commit "suicide by cop." The police established a perimeter around the house, and officers from the Emergency Service Unit, Bureau of Special Operations and Hostage Negotiations arrived on the scene. At 1:20 a.m., police say flames were seen on the second floor of the home, and they quickly spread throughout most of the floor. He refused to leave the home, police said. Emergency Service Unit officers and firefighters entered the home and found him in the basement semi-conscious. He was removed from the home and given medical aid. Hewas placed under arrest and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Firefighters at the scene battled the blaze for nearly two hours before getting it under control. More than 60 firefighters from the Point Lookout, Lawrence, Cedarhurst, Inwood and Island Park fire departments responded to the scene. No firefighters were injured.
