The Staples Girls' Golf Team has never lost a season opener at its home course. That time span stretches three decades.
The tradition continued with a 186-232 victory over St. Joes at Longshore Golf Course on Wednesday.
"Even with the strong wind, Kathleen and I were able to push through and play with the wind. The team pulled through even without many of our varsity players. The season looks promising!" commented Senior Co-Captain Lizzie Kuehndorf.
Kuehndorf and Sophomore Kathleen Coffey picked the perfect days to shoot season low 43 and 42 scores respectively, while Staples was missing stars Leni Lemcke and Keeva Boyle. Junior Reilly McGeehan was solid again with a 49 and freshman Rachel Pontoriero carded a 52 to round out the scoring.
"Not even a little wind could shake us," added McGeehan, who seemed to not notice gusts up to 30 MPH and wind chill in the low 40's.
Making their Staples varsity debuts were sophomore Eliza Edwards and freshman Kate Barnes.
Next up is Fairfield Ludlowe at Longshore on Thursday.
The Wreckers are 4-0.
