WAYLAND, MA — Here's what's happening at the Wayland Free Public Library the week of May 2 2, 2022. ADULT SERVICES Author Talk: Dr. Robin T. W. Yuan In honor of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, Yuan will speak on his book RedBishop, the story of his grandfather Robin Chen, the last presiding bishop of the AnglicanChurch in China. Yuan charts Chen's journey from his early childhood years and his youthfulconversion to Christianity to his death under house arrest decades later. Dr. Yuan is a graduateof Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. He is an assistant clinical professor of plasticsurgery at UCLA and was one of the original participants in the hit TV show, "ExtremeMakeover." Presented in partnership with the Belmont, Maynard and Winchester PublicLibraries. Register through our Events menu. Wednesday, May 11 at 7 p.m. Wilderness Backpacking Dennis Vaccaro and his college roommate have shared an annual backpacking trip for over 40years. Their goal is not speed or distance, but to enjoy the wilderness and the solitude. They tryto avoid national parks and look for quieter places. Once they are a few days beyond thetrailhead, they often won't see another (human) soul. Dennis's talk will include a brief history ofbackpacking, preparation for a trip, and highlights from several trips to the mountains andcanyons of the western US. Register through our Events menu. Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m. Friends Children's Book Sale It's back! After a hiatus of more than two years, the Friends of the Wayland Library will be holding a book sale. Saturday, May 14, 11-4 p.m. and Sunday, May 15, 2-4 p.m. Attention, Wayland Residents of Chinese Heritage Whether your family hails from China, Singapore, Taiwan, the United States, or anywhere else,we want to document your experience living in Wayland. We want all Wayland residents,whether next year or a hundred years from now, to hear your voices. We will keep your answersin our historical collection for future generations. Wednesday, May 25, at 4:00 p.m. ZOOM Celebration of the Publication of Children's Illustration of 100 years of Chinese Immigration to the U.S. and Canada The Wayland library together with the Wayland Chinese American Association (WCAA) andThe Wayland Human Rights, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee (HRDEIC ) are hostinga zoom event to celebrate the publication of Children's Illustration of 100 years of Chineseimmigration in the United States and Canada. The book contains 290 paintings created in thepast 2 years by 70 young talented artists (7- 18 years old) from US and Canada. Editor in ChiefXI Zhang, as well as several young artists who have contributed to this book project, will join usto share their knowledge and appreciation of those Chinese ancestors who contributed to thebuilding of the railroads in both US and Canada.
