Press release from the City of South San Francisco: April 29, 2022 The library is celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month with virtual and in-person events, along with resources and guides to learn more about AAPI Heritage. Book Lists Books for children and adults about the Asian American experience, AAPI history, culture, and communities: Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2022 Romances with Asian American and Pacific Islander Leads 2022 Picture books to celebrate AAPI Month Library Programming Adult Services Virtual: Art Across Asia: Masterpieces of the Asian Art Museum - Thursday, May 19, 2-3pm What constitutes a "masterpiece?" Why are some objects considered masterworks while others are relegated to lesser positions? Explore some answers as illustrated by a few of the very best treasures of the Asian Art Museum. These are masterworks from the vast and varied regions we collectively call Asia, which stretches from the Mediterranean to the Pacific. Fabulous statues, ancient bronzes, mystic jade, delicate ceramics, and evocative paintings – let them engulf you in their amazing beauty and workmanship. Presented by the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco Community Speakers Program. Registration is required. This program is made possible by the South San Francisco Friends of the Library. Stream First to Go: Story of the Kataoka Family while at the library, or watch the recorded interview with the film maker, Myles Matsuno In First to Go, a Japanese-American grandmother recounts her father's incarceration during World War II and the ramifications it had on her family. Weaving through her story, her grandson's experience, and archival footage, First to Go brings you an intimate, inspirational, and emotional story of the impact traumatic events can have across generations. You can watch the documentary while onsite at the library, and you can stream the recorded interview from home. In-person: Adult Crafternoon: Paper Lei – Friday, May 6, 1-3pm Welcome back to Adult Crafternoon! To celebrate we will be making paper lei. Lei has a longstanding history within Polynesian culture that dates back thousands of years. We often see them at graduation ceremonies and other celebrations. If you have a soon to be graduate, learn how to fold paper or dollars (bring your own) and string your lay. Supplies are limited. Registration is required. It's a time to recognize the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. Please join the City of South San Francisco to celebrate our AAPI community as we host a FREE picnic featuring food from our local AAPI restaurants. KQED's AAPI Heritage Month TV Lineup KQED is proud to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month starting in May with a special TV programming lineup. Online exhibitions and events with the Smithsonian Check out the Smithsonian's Asian Pacific American Center's online museum for artistic and educational content presented throughout AAPI month and year-round. United States of Asia America: Generations of Power Festival with the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center Each year, the United States of Asian American Festival (USAAF) presents up to 20 different programs reflecting the artistic accomplishments and cultural diversity of San Francisco's Pacific Islander and Asian American communities.
