SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Two Suffolk County beaches were closed to swimming after high levels of bacteria were found in the water. Suffolk County health officials announced Wednesday that Venetian Shores Beach in Lindenhurst and Benjamin Beach in Bay Shore were shut down. According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gregson Pigott, swimming in bacteria-contaminated water can result in stomach illness, as well as infections in the eyes, ears, nose and throat. The beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels. For the latest information on affected beaches, call the Bathing Beach HOTLINE at 852-5822 or contact the Department's Office of Ecology at 852-5760 during normal business hours.
