Plumstead Man Illegally Owned Automatic Gun, Firearm Parts: Police

PLUMSTEAD, PA — A 64-year-old Plumstead man was arrested last week after a search of his home turned up an automatic rifle as well as equipment, parts, and ammunition for firearms, police said. The Plumstead Township Police Department served a search warrant at 6 p.m. Thursday at Scott Allen McCaughey's Durham Road home. Officers said they found a black fully automatic M4 rifle with no serial numbers displayed and a bolt-action rifle with an obliterated serial number, as well as two clear baggies of a crystal rock substance they believed to be methamphetamine. According to a criminal complaint, McCaughey admitted during an interview to knowingly possessing the firearms illegally based on his prior convictions, including a felony conviction for robbery in 1980. The search of his home also uncovered milling equipment McCaughey used in the manufacture of firearms, parts to manufacture more firearms, ammunition, and magazines, investigators said. Police charged McCaughey with two counts of prohibited possession of a firearm as well as one count each of possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number and possession of a controlled substance on Friday. His bail was set at 10 percent of $75,000. This investigation was conducted by Detective William Mooney of the Plumstead Township Police Department and Officer Stephan Pekach of the Bedminster Township Police Department, with assistance from the Attorney General's Office Bureau of Narcotics.
