Wilsonville Sets Second Annual Juneteenth Celebration For June 18

WILSONVILLE, OR — Wilsonville will hold a Juneteenth celebration on June 18, the city announced Monday. It will be second straight time that the city has marked the day. The city said that it is now "an annual event." The event, which is organized by the city's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, is free and will take place at Town Center Park from 10 a.m. through noon. In a statement, the city referred to the event as one "designed to bring people of all races, nationalities and religions together to celebrate our shared humanity and acknowledge history that continues to influence society today." A $7,500 Community Opportunity Grant from the city's general fund was approved to fund the celebration, according to the city. Jujuba, a Portland-based band that plays Nigerian juju and Afrobeat music, will perform. There will also be educational materials about the celebration, normally observed on June 19 to mark the day that word of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas, the city said.
