RYE, NY — Rye police are begging residents to stop making things easy for car thieves and to instead start making things a little easier for law enforcement and safer for neighbors. Since 2020, the City of Rye has had 71 vehicles stolen from residents' driveways, according to police. Amazingly, all of those vehicles were unlocked with the keys left inside. In addition to the stolen cars, items were stolen from 55 more cars that were left unlocked. Since March 11, 11 cars were stolen in the City of Rye. The car thefts don't just affect the homeowners who made themselves easy pickings for car thieves. Police said the cars stolen from Rye have been used to commit crimes in other jurisdictions. The vehicles have been recovered from Hartford to Newark. Worst of all, the car thieves have proven time and again that they will not simply pull over for police. Dangerous high-speed pursuits have been directly tied to car thefts in Rye. Police are asking residents to lock car doors and to remove the key or key fob from the car after parking. Police also suggest drivers take personal property inside with them or at least keep tempting valuables out of view in parked cars. "This year we have had 4 vehicles stolen in broad daylight on two separate Sunday afternoons," City of Rye police officials said in a statement. "In video obtained the subjects are usually dressed in black from head to toe with their faces covered and wearing work gloves. Patrol Units are aware of the current rise in crime and are doing their best but we need the community's assistance."
