SUTTON, MA — A screen at the former Sutton Motor-In drive-in theater burned down Sunday evening in a brush fire that engulfed a wider area along Route 146, according to local police and fire departments.
The fire broke out just after 5 p.m. along southbound Route 146 north of Boston Road. The fire jumped across the highway, bringing traffic to a standstill, according to the Auburn Fire Department. About 10 local fire departments and state police responded to fight the blaze.
"The brush fire moved quickly and extended to the structure that holds up the viewing screen and jumped across the highway to the Harback Road area. We called in a number of engines and tankers to the scene and two engines to cover the town from many of our mutual aid partners, as well as the Fire Marshall's office," the Sutton Fire Department said in an update Sunday.
The former Sutton Motor-In, which opened in the 1940s, sits on about 10 acres along Route 146. The theater closed in 1996, but a stone entrance and marquee are still visible from the highway.
