Press release from Lindenhurst Union Free School District: November 11, 2020 Throughout the month of October Lindenhurst Union Free School District students and staff celebrated the Halloween season in myriad safe and socially distant ways. On the elementary level, several schools took part in PTA sponsored pumpkin patches, and asked students to wear black and orange, spooky pajamas and in some cases costumes on Oct. 30 to show their Halloween spirit. At Daniel Street Elementary School, students learning remotely and in person in Alyson Ferreby's and Erica Padden's classes took part in a fun guessing activity in which students learning remotely wore costumes and provided clues during a Google meet session to those students learning in person. The students in class then made guesses before their classmates revealed their chosen costume on screen. Students in Nicole Fellin's class took part in a Halloween scavenger hunt in the Daniel Street hallways while at Harding Avenue Elementary students got into the autumn spirit by decorating and carving pumpkins for the school's first pumpkin decorating contest. Participants were required to submit their entries by Nov. 4 and students had the opportunity to vote for their favorite virtually. Winners announced on Nov. 9 received a prize. At Albany Avenue Elementary School, students in Lisa Cognato and Melissa Slater's first grade Spanish dual language side-by-side class, created skeletons out of Q-tips and labeled the parts of the body in both languages. Sponsored and organized each year by the Student Council, Safe Halloween took place once more, albeit in a different format. Rather than decorating the hallways of the Lindenhurst High School, various clubs and student government organizations set up a safe and fun environment for children to collect treats and enjoy Halloween in the school's parking lot.
