LINDENHURST, NY — Trigger has finally been adopted— but by a town, not a family. The pit bull mix, who spent over five years at the Town of Babylon animal shelter, was formally adopted by the town this week. Because Trigger has medical issues and doesn't do well with other dogs and cats, the shelter caretakers decided his best permanent home was at the shelter, and to be a companion dog for the town and the shelter.
Shelter director Chris Elton told Newsday that "this is amazing for Trigger and this is amazing for us. He has become part of this shelter."
Trigger was adopted in a formal ceremony at Babylon Town Hall, wearing a top hat for the occasion. The Babylon Town Board voted unanimously to adopt him so he can permanently "enjoy first class care and amenities at our state of the art Babylon Animal Shelter, his 'fur'-ever home," as the town posted on Facebook.
"In 2015, Trigger came to the Babylon Animal Shelter malnourished and in bad health. In the last five years, our amazing shelter staff have cared for him and given him the special attention his health issues require. Now, he is a warm, loving companion and staple of the shelter."
Trigger is the first ever dog to be named an official companion animal for Babylon.
