Description
Hey y'all! I'm a songwriter currently running a solo recording project under the moniker Satori Loser. The best umbrella term for my music is probably art rock or indie/alternative. As is common in this post-genre era I draw from many styles of music but don't pledge allegiance to any one in particular. I also write poetry so lyrics are an important feature. You can listen to my first solo EP "Aposematic" at satoriloser.bandcamp.com. In the middle of recording a new album right now and can share a couple rough mixes if we get to talking. Influences: Many. Basically I grew up on music from skate videos and a lot of 90s hip hop: Tupac, Biggie, Wu Tang, Tribe Called Quest. In high school, I loved the sacred triangle of art rock/proto-punk: Bowie, Lou Reed, and Iggy Pop. Dug Radiohead and the Pixies and stuff. Discovered Talking Heads, Television, Joy Division/New Order, Sonic Youth, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds through them. Had a soft spot for Beach House. Got into jazz in college, starting with Miles and Coltrane and then down the rabbit hole. Love Mingus, Monk, Dolphy, Chet Baker and some of the great female vocalists. Got into the songwriter-poets: Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits. Delved deeper into post-punk: Birthday Party, Bauhaus, Pop Group, OMD. Fell in love with the decade-spanning music of Scott Walker. Got into afrobeat, neo-soul, r&b: Fela Kuti, D'Angelo, Sade. Got into Bjork, Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins. Got into film scores. Most recent favorites include King Krule, Anna Von Hausswolff, black midi, Kendrick, Frank Ocean's "Blonde", Nas "Illmatic", Andrew Hill, L'Rain, Brian Eno & Harold Budd's ambient albums. Intentions: What I'm looking for is a group of trusted collaborators to help realize my existing material in a live setting and then evolve from there. I want to combine the shadows of post-punk, the color palette of jazz, and the rhythm of hip hop with a touch of the celestial quality of ambient music, synths, and film scores. Something like that. Romance and dread. Sensitivity and aggression. Floaty, funky, pretty, gritty. Simple but with intention. A pop-structured skeleton but with more ambitious flesh on it, you know? Probably not, but we can chat about it over a beer or something. Looking for people who can appreciate negative space, who are down to "serve the song", to listen carefully for what it needs. Looking for bass, synth, and saxophone right now. I may have a drummer in the works but if you play drums please feel free to reach out. Would be cool to find multi-instrumentalists. For example if you play sax but also know your way around a keyboard that would be dope. Or if you play bass but are also down to operate a sampler that would be dope too. Practical things: Looking for people who are present, positive, chill. People who can commit to semi-regular rehearsals and shows. I'm 30 so preferably 20s or 30s. Would be honored to share the stage with a diverse group of human beings. Friends and I are looking to go in on a monthly space but in the meantime I can book space hourly. Can't pay y'all out of my own pocket for your participation but will cover costs of rehearsal and such with live proceeds split evenly. If you're interested please feel free to reach out with a link to something you've played on. Look forward to hearing from you!
