Please read entire post before sending me an email. We are looking to rehome a super sweet 10 month old female kelpie mix. We believe she is a kelpie lab mix. We recently adopted her from the animal shelter, but due to some unforeseen circumstances we need to rehome her. We had the option to return her to the shelter, but we decided to rehome her on our own because it might be confusing and/ or traumatic for her to go back there, and we would rather just transition her directly to her new home. This is no fault of hers, she is a wonderful dog and we are really sad that we have to make this decision. We live on a lot of land and she is able to roam free, but has been bringing ticks and poison oak into our house, and my husband was bitten by a tick and contracted a severe poison oak rash after she had been outside. We have a 2 year old and the stress of checking her for ticks and cleaning the poison oak with the worry that our daughter might get bitten by a tick or contract poison oak is too much for us to handle. My daughter named her Lulu. She has a lot of energy. Read up on kelpies before you consider because she will get into trouble if she is cooped up and doesn’t have a job to do (herding, fetching the stick, being your companion on long hikes) a small yard is not going to do it for her. She can run like the wind. She is very sensitive. She would become depressed if she couldn’t cuddle up with you at the end of the day. We don’t want her to go to a home where she would live separate from her family. She is very friendly and affectionate. She needs to be able to trust you. She will stay by your side if she has that trust. She needs a lot of attention. We haven’t left her home alone, it is possible that she could be crate trained to be left alone for short periods of time (an hour or two) she would not do well to be left alone or confined longer than that. She will become depressed and will probably withdraw from you. She is good with all other dogs she has met. I’m not sure that kelpies do well living with other dogs. She has been very gentle with our daughter. She’s growled at my daughter for laying on her legs/ stomach but she was also just spayed before we took her home so she has been recovering and was likely telling my daughter to back off because she was hurting her. She may do best in a home with older kids who can keep up with her energy levels and would know not to stick their hand in her mouth. She is mouthy but still a puppy so she will probably outgrow this. If we give her a toy she stays busy with that. But she will need some deer antler type chews because she can destroy soft toys pretty quickly. She is mellow inside, but our house is really small and she knows we do the playing outside. She is really intelligent and easy to train. She walks well on a leash without pulling. We use a harness and we would like her to go to a family that would use a harness to walk her rather than a collar. If this ad is up, she’s still available. We are going to take our time to make sure she goes to the right home where she will be loved and a part of your family for the rest of her life.
