Hopkins Street Bridge Project: Work Starts On Phase 2

WAKEFIELD, MA — Work on the second phase of the Hopkins Street Bridge project started Wednesday, Jan. 22, according to MassDOT. The project will completely remove the bridge deck, sidewalks, railing, protective screen, joints and end posts over I-95/Rt. 128 in Wakefield, MassDOT said. Work will include repairing the structural steel, modifying the abutment and center pier, cleaning the bridge, painting beam ends and reconstructing parts of Hopkins Street. The existing sewer main will be replaced by a new water main on the bridge. Under Phase 2 of the project, the second half of the existing bridge deck will be demolished. Work will take place between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. and is expected to last approximately 4-6 weeks. Once demolition is finished, daytime work will run from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and consist of installing water and sewer mains, forming and placement of steel reinforcements to prepare for the deck pour. The Project is divided into two phases to limit impacts to town residents and commuters. Each phase allows for one half of the bridge to be removed and replaced, allowing pedestrians and vehicular traffic to use the undisturbed portion of the bridge.
