LEVITTOWN, NY — The spread of coronavirus in Levittown has climbed to nearly 900 cases, according to figures published by Nassau County on Sunday. In New York state, Nassau's 36,780 confirmed coronavirus cases is second only to the outbreak in New York City. A recent study of 15,000 New York state residents showed 11.4 percent of Long Islanders tested positive for antibodies indicating they'd been infected by COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. On Sunday, Nassau County reported its coronavirus-related deaths had reached 2,194. A hotline is also available for questions at 1-888-364-3065, as well as an email form. Drive-thru test sites have been established across Long Island. These facilities reduce density and the potential for spread by keeping sick and at-risk people out of health care facilities where they could infect others. The drive-thru sites are prioritizing people showing symptoms and who are among the highest risk population and those who have been in close contact with someone with the disease, as well as health care workers, nursing home workers and first responders. Testing is by appointment only. Test results are sent to people by phone or text, and can be found using an online portal. SCHOOLS Along with all nonessential businesses, all state school buildings will be closed until at least May 15. On Friday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that New York public schools will stay closed for the rest of the spring semester. Students in the Levittown Public Schools are using remote learning techniques to teach children. All Hempstead Town Department of Parks and Recreation playgrounds, dog parks, courts and golf courses were closed until further notice. This is in addition to temporary closures at Newbridge Ice Rink, the Echo Park Pool Complex and the postponement of all activities, community events, Camp ANCHOR programs and meetings. Also, the Norman J. Levy Park and Reserve in Merrick was also closed until further notice. Hempstead Town municipal marinas have been reopened with additional safety protocols to ensure social distancing. Lido Golf Course reopened April 23. Passport Day, scheduled for April 25 at Town Hall, was canceled. The April 18 E-Cycle & Shredding Program and the April 19 S.T.O.P. Program were canceled. The Hempstead Town Tax Office was closed to the public, though property tax payments can be paid online or by mail. Enforcement of parking permits was suspended until further notice. The Diocese of Rockville Centre announced that all funerals, weddings and other services at Catholic churches across Long Island are canceled. In March, the Diocese said all masses for a month — including all Holy Week and Easter services — would be canceled due to the coronavirus.
