Description

Join us for a program that features Afghan and Ukranian perspectives, as well as a speaker from the International Rescue Committee. The stories you will hear at this program represent two of millions of stories of people on this challenging journey. That's why we have these conversations. To listen. To learn. To make their story our story... The Washington Center for International Education (WCIE) and English Now! offer this program to the community, to inspire the DC-area international and local communities to come together to welcome refugees to the area. We are grateful to our speakers. Sarwar Azizi, who served as a senior official in Afghanistan's Central Bank and Ministry of Education, and previously with the United Nations, will speak about his family's experience as well as how we can understand the needs of Afghan evacuees. Likewise, Mikhail Basyuk will share a Ukrainian Russian's perspective--a personal story of coming to the U.S. We will also hear from Kyle Monsees, Volunteer & Family Mentor Coordinator for the DC-area headquarters of the International Rescue Committee (IRC). You are invited to talk to Kyle as well as his colleague Joshua Shokoor, IRC Community Engagement Specialist, about how you can get involved supporting refugee resettlement locally. Our challenge: think globally, engage locally. WCIE and English Now! partner with the IRC for local community service programs serving recently-resettled refugees, and English Now! is pleased to support refugee students on scholarships in its adult-centered English program. WCIE and English Now! thank the Connie Morella (Bethesda) Library for hosting this program and the many volunteers and supporters who make this and all of our programs possible.
