Press release from the Town of Wakefield: September 30, 2020 Our Town Charter directs that our School Committee be composed of seven members elected for terms of three years each. Due to a a second resignation, the Committee has an immediate opening to fulfill the unexpired term through April 2021 (at that time the position will be on the ballot for a two-year term). If you recently applied within the last few weeks, there is no need to re-submit your application and resume. The School Committee operates in accordance with the MGL Ch. 71. As revised by the Educational Reform Act of 1993, Ch. 71 S. 37 specifies this authority as follows: "The School Committee in each city and town and each regional school district shall have the power to appoint the Superintendent, shall review and approve budgets for public education in the district, and shall establish educational goals and policies for the schools in the district, consistent with the requirements of law and statewide goals and standards established by the State Board of Education." The Committee determines overall School Department policy and budget. The School Committee conducts public meetings which are broadcast on a local TV station. The Committee and Superintendent continually seek ways to obtain sufficient funding to support the Department's programs from available sources at the local, state and federal levels. The Town Charter provides: "The powers of the School Committee shall include, but need not be limited to, the power to appoint and terminate a superintendent of schools, and all other officers and employees associated with the schools except as otherwise provided by the laws of the Commonwealth, fix their compensation, define their duties, and discharge them; and, the power to make all reasonable rules and regulations, consistent with law, for the administration and management of the public schools of the Town." The Wakefield School Committee regularly meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, with one meeting in each of the months of July and December. This schedule is subject to change. The School Committee meets at 7:30 p.m. currently via Zoom virtual meeting. Appointment will be made on Thursday, October, 15th, at a joint meeting of the School Committee and Town Council pursuant to Massachusetts General Law.
