Panels discussing race, history, and public policy moderated by Congressman Jim Clyburn and UofSC Interim President Harris Pastides The Charleston Forum invites you to our first in-person event since 2019; a program titled Appreciating Each Other’s History: Monuments, Memory, and the Future of the Past in the Palmetto State. The Charleston Forum strives to provide the community with a meaningful dialogue on race and other issues. This year, the Forum is excited to welcome Congressman Jim Clyburn and University of South Carolina Interim President Harris Pastides as moderators of the two panels. The first panel, moderated by Congressman Clyburn, will consist of a group public historians who will touch on topics such as the nature and importance of public history; changes in the public history landscape of our state and region since the murders at Mother Emanuel; Charleston’s current public history landscape; ways in which the current public history landscape might be improved; and ways in which historians and public officials might work together to better their communities. Historians on the first panel include: -Mike Allen -Walter Edgar -Blain Roberts -[insert more] The second panel, moderated by President Pastides, will bring together a bipartisan group of current and former elected officials to offer dialogue on origins and provisions of South Carolina's Heritage Act and its future; recommendations of the History/Culture Committee of Charleston Special Commission, and the role of state government in shaping the public history of South Carolina going forward.
