THE VIEWS OF WINTERTHUR MUSEUM, GARDEN AND LIBRARY... Photo by user timeoffwithkathleen, caption reads Yesterday I ventured to Winterthur gardens and museum. I absolutely love it here. The property is vast (~1000 acres), the foliage is stunning, and the history is strong. ~*~*~ Winterthur is one of the numerous properties that the DuPont family owned here in Delaware. Over three generations they expanded the "house" to nine stories and 175 rooms, making it the 5th largest house in the US. In the 1950's the house was turned into a museum and a cottage was built for Henry & his wife. It was a meager three stories and 50+ rooms. ~*~*~ The estate's gardens were designed by female landscape architect Marian Coffin. Her and Henry worked together to create a beautiful landscape across the estate's 2,600+ acres, which included farmland, over 90 buildings, 12 greenhouses, and a dairy farm. *~*~* The tree in the 4th photo is over 300 years old, the oldest now on the property after a tornado took out another 300+ year old tree. In the 5th picture you can see the reflecting pool. It used to be the family's swimming pool, but it's since been filed in to a depth of 18". The 7th photo is an example of the landscaping that Marian created. The final photo is taken from inside a little gazebo. Henry loved a gazebo he saw at a friend's property so much that had workers recreate it. ~*~*~ #winterthur #delaware #dupont #winterthurmuseum #WinterthurDelaware #visitDelaware #ExploreDelaware #Hometown #DiscoverDelaware #DelawareDiscoveries #ExploreYourBackYard #Gardens #Museum #winterthurgardensandmuseum #winterthurgardens #foliage #trees #earthday #delawarehistory #springtimeindelaware #delawarespring #greenspace@timeoffwithkathleen THE VIEWS OF BRANDYWINE PARK...
