UHD : New Bachelor's Program In Human Resources Management Coming This Fall

Press release from the University of Houston-Downtown: April 27, 2022 This Fall, the Marilyn Davies College of Business will offer a new Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree program in Human Resources Management (HRM), which was approved by the Texas Higher Education Board in March of this year. UHD is the first higher education institution in Greater Houston to host a bachelor's program dedicated to HRM that addresses the increasing need for human resource professionals. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the growth of human resources jobs requiring a bachelor's degree will increase between 15-20 percent over the next decade. Dr. Julio Canedo, Assistant Professor of Management, said the program is designed in alignment with the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) curriculum as well as input from human resource leaders in the Houston area. "There is a great demand for qualified and talented human resource professionals in today's job market," Canedo said. "With our University being located in the heart of Downtown, this new program provides for great networking and future career opportunities in the human resources field." With a HRM degree, students can secure careers as job analysts, recruitment specialists, compensation and benefits specialists, and ultimately human resource manager. Upon completion of this degree, students will: Understand the legal, regulatory, and ethical aspects of HRM processes. Design compensation and benefits systems that are internally fair and externally competitive. Examine the various forms of diversity and inclusion and its role in business. Create strategies to identify needs, design, implement and evaluate effective training and development programs. Develop practical skills to attract, select, and manage talent. Outline the logic, metrics, methods, and data analysis conducive to strategic HR decision-making. Design HRM systems aligned to the strategic organizational intent. In addition, students can take elective courses that will prepare them for the Society for Human Resource Management-Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) test. Canedo noted that this certification is attractive to employers seeking qualified human resource professionals. "The SHRM-CP certification is a great asset to have, and it opens doors for better opportunities for students to land jobs and succeed in their careers," he said.
