CAMDEN COUNTY, NJ — The New Jersey American Water company said it is scheduled to begin flushing the hydrants in Bellmawr and Lindenwold on Monday. The neighborhood-by-neighborhood project should be completed by May 14, according to the company. New Jersey American Water Company's website said these flushings help clean their pipes and let the company know which hydrants might need repair. Those who live or work in specific neighborhoods where the hydrants are actively being flushed may temporarily experience low water pressure and/or have discolored water, the company said. "This is normal," the company said regarding discoloration. "If this happens, it is not harmful. Simply let your water run until it is clear." The discoloration should go away within a few hours, according to the company. Low water pressure can usually be resolved by removing particles that became trapped on faucet screens during the flushing process. The company advises customers to set aside water for cooking and to prepare a large bottle of water to use for drinking ahead of time before the flushing starts. After the flushing is complete -- which usually takes about 1 hour, according to the company -- customers should make sure their water runs clear again before using a washing machine or dishwasher. Customers can visit the company's website or call the company at 1-800-272-1325 to receive a text, email, or phone call when the hydrants will be flushed in their specific neighborhood.
