LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Thurston Middle School students enrolled in the school's forensics class got down to business Wednesday after participating in a mock crime scene investigation, a spokesperson for Laguna Beach Unified School District told Patch. The investigation is designed to put forensics students to the test while participating in a historical mock crime scene investigation. The investigation takes place every year, and this year, students tackled the death of John Wilkes Booth at Garrett's Farm in 1865. "Working as a lead detective on the John Wilkes Booth crime case was really exciting and fun," 8th grade student Ella Villoria said. "I was able to apply what I learned in forensics to help solve the crime scene with my team. It was a great experience." Thurston Middle School forensics has coordinated with the Laguna Beach Police Department to help coordinate and guide the experience for the past five years. This year, the Laguna Beach Fire Department and their Arson Investigator added an extra layer of realism to the day by providing insight to the students as they led their investigation.
