TEWKSBURY, MA — President Trump's loss in Massachusetts on Tuesday was in line with his performance in 2016. With 70 percent of estimated votes reporting, his share of the vote has fallen from 33 percent to 31 percent. So how did Trump's support in Tewksbury compare with his vote totals in 2016, when he was running against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton? According to unofficial results from the town clerk, Trump gained votes in Tewksbury in 2020, but lost vote share. In 2016, Trump carried the town, but Biden won it in 2020. In 2016, he earned 8,432 votes in town, compared to 8,631 votes in 2020. He won 49.4 percent in 2016 and 45.8 percent in 2020, in line with the statewide trend. Not every community in Middlesex County broke for Biden. Trump squeaked out wins in Ashby and Dracut, where he bested Biden by a mere 110 votes, according to unofficial results. Tuesday's vote climaxed a heated battle for control of the White House, unfolding during a pandemic that killed nearly a quarter of a million Americans before Election Day. As of Wednesday afternoon, the election remained too close to call, with multiple key states still counting votes.
