What is garage rock?

Description
Looking to start a good ol' NW style "garage" band. Talent is less crucial than personality, contribution, and shared vision, but not looking for total beginners either. Any gender (or none), all ages above 21, LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC encouraged. I can sing and write, but hope to share those roles. I play guitar, bass, drums, keys, and a bit of tenor sax, so I'm casting a wide net and will just play whatever I can't find. I'm early 40s, been playing in bands (mostly NW) since my teens. I have gear, and can host lightweight jams at home occasionally til things flesh out. The short term goal is to play 20ish minute all-killer-no-filler sets opening up for better bands around the area, put out some recordings, maybe a video, have some fun! Like I said, the main sound is garage rock... I don't mean psychedelic or surf (although I like that stuff). I'm looking for something harder, dirtier, and very R&B/soul driven. No acoustic guitars or 12 strings, no shoegazy delays or walls of reverb, trippy panning, or long guitar solos- again, not hating, but I have a specific thing in mind. Absolutely no bar band boogie rock blooz! Obviously the Sonics, the Wailers, Girl Trouble, and Dead Moon are the starting place. Next up is the Estrus stuff, the Makers, the Mono Men, some Mummies stuff. I'm also thinking Oblivians, Gories, Quadrajets, Detroit Cobras (but only a *few* covers), the Go's first record? The twist I want is pushing it more toward the Make Up, the Now Time Delegation, kinda "Silky" by Andre Williams, and maybe just a *little* bit close to the Bellrays, the Cherry Valence, or the earliest MC5 (but with 2-1/2 minute songs and no wheedling solos.) I'm just listing the most relevant stuff but the influences run deep and wide. Hard but super swinging drums, the usual driving guitars, kinda funky but cranked-to-dirt bass, some organ/piano and/or low grinding sax, and charged up soul vocals? I just wanna make the music I wish I could go see. If you are into any of the listed influences and want to get together, hit me up, let's exchange the usual vetting stuff like links/tracks/whatever, and talk music! If you haven't heard any of those bands, do yourself a favor and check them out!!!
