I will demonstrate the techniques of sumi-e paintings and you will practice and create a sumi-e landscape painting. Joanna Brown : Introduction to Sumi-e ( Japanese ink painting) Dates: Sunday, May 29th – 2022 Time: 10am -1pm Frequency of Class: 1 day class Cost: $50  Class Size: 8 maximum Vaccinations and Face Masks required Class Details: Sumi-e means black ink painting. Using black ink and creating a white space on the paper, you will paint spontaneously to capture the spirit of nature. The focus of the art of sumi-e painting is on the quality of the line and the brush stroke to capture the forms of nature. In this introductory class I will demonstrate the techniques of sumi-e paintings and you will practice and create a sumi-e landscape painting. I will give individual instruction, tips and ideas. Supply List:  Please bring with you! Three or four small white ceramic dishes for ink mixing. (Ramekin/soufflé dishes work best!) A roll of paper towels! Two small objects to use as paper weights. Or masking tape and a substrate. If you have a photograph of a particular landscape that you love please bring it with you! I will also have landscape photographs for you to use as reference. All other materials will be supplied. About the Artist: Joanna Brown relocated to Portland from England in 2020. She is an experienced teacher and artist. She taught art in schools in England for 20 years and created ArtFlow, an art group, which offered children a creative space to explore and expand their artistic flare. Joanna is a practicing artist, specializing in Chinese Brush Painting, Sumi-e Painting and Watercolor.
