WASHINGTON, DC — Lyft is offering free scooter trips to essential workers in Washington, D.C. during the coronavirus pandemic. Essential workers — such as hospital staff, first responders, pharmacists, and grocery store employees — can take advantage of these free 30-minute scooter rides through April 30. "We are very grateful to companies like Lyft who are working to ease the lives of District residents who are serving on the front lines," District Councilmember Brandon Todd said. "This new initiative will allow essential workers to continue their life-saving work on behalf of our entire community." Employers can enroll their staff into the program by emailing [email protected]. The ride-share company's free scooter program is an extension of the LyftUp initiative, which provides no-cost rides for low-income families, seniors, and other vulnerable D.C. residents. In partnership with local nonprofits, businesses, and government offices, Lyft is giving free ride credits to communities in need. Residents can use these ride credits to get to school meal sites, grocery stores, doctors appointments, essentials jobs, and childcare. "We want to increase access to transportation for those who need it, particularly to meet their essential needs during this time," said Emily Ellis, Lyft's general manager for Washington, D.C. "By activating LyftUp, we're able to partner with a number of D.C.-based organizations to fill mobility needs and provide access to essentials for the D.C. community."
