Description

Press release from the City of Ames: April 27, 2022 The Ames Human Relations Commission (AHRC) presented its annual "A Home for Everyone" award to Alan Christy at the Ames City Council meeting held Tuesday. "A Home for Everyone" award recognizes and honors a worthy individual or organization that has made an exemplary commitment to providing safe, quality, and equitable housing opportunities that enhance the quality of life of members of disadvantaged populations in the Ames community. The Commission presents the award annually during April, which is Fair Housing Month. Alan Christy has spent many years volunteering his vast knowledge and experience in building and remodeling homes. Through his efforts, hundreds of individuals with disabilities and/or low-income families have been housed. Christy's efforts have included volunteering as general contractor for six Friendship Ark homes, which provide accessible and low-income housing to individuals with disabilities; volunteering for Habitat for Humanity projects; and assisting with the building of a four-plex to expand the ability to serve more families through The Bridge Home. As noted in his nomination, "Alan not only volunteers his knowledge, but has also never shied away from picking up a hammer and doing the work himself. He exemplifies the desire for A Home for Everyone." In presenting the award, Ames Human Relations Commission Chair Jahmai Fisher thanked Christy for his efforts to make the Ames community better and bring hope into the lives of so many. Other Commission members in attendance included Wayne Clinton, Dr. Chunhui Chen, and Madesh Samanu. The AHRC's purpose is to help minimize or eliminate the existence of discrimination in the community, promote goodwill among the various racial, religious, and ethnic groups in the City, and cooperate with other organizations to develop programs designed to eliminate racial, religious, cultural, and intergroup tensions.
