Press release from the City of Franklin: April 28, 2022 Franklin, TN – After a 29-year firefighting career, including 25 with the Franklin Fire Department, Engineer Rick Havrilla will retire at the end of this week, when he completes his final 24-hour shift on Sunday morning at 6 AM. A retirement party took place yesterday at Franklin Fire Station 1, where Havrilla has been assigned for the past 10 years. Havrilla was inspired and encouraged to be a firefighter by his Uncle Bob Havrilla, who was Fire Chief of their hometown fire department in Portage, Indiana. While working as an EMT at the local steel mill, Havrilla started volunteering with the Chesterton Volunteer Fire Department. He quickly moved into a firefighting role with his employer, then in 1996 was hired as a career firefighter by the Michigan City (IN) Fire Department.
