PORTLAND, OR — Two people who were crossing the street are in the hospital after being hit by a stolen van Friday afternoon, according to Portland police. They said that it happened around 5 p.m. One of the people was severely injured according to Portland police. The driver and someone else who was in the van fled the scene and are being sought, according to police. Police said that the van was stolen around SE 26th Avenue and SE Ash Street by Central Catholic High School. Officers started to give chase but abandoned it because of how fast the van was going, police said. Other officers were able to lay down spike strips, which punctured at least one of the van's tires, according to police. The van's driver apparently lost control, struck the two pedestrians and crashed into another vehicle. That driver was not injured, police said. Police said that K-9 units as well as air support units are helping in the search for the suspects.
