Description
It's the season for procreation. Have been noting all sorts of birds playing the Mating Game, turkeys included.
A couple weeks back, an elegant hen paid a visit to my street, observing, delicately foraging around as if looking for a place to settle.
That was indeed the case, as a few days later, on Easter no less, the neighbors found her arranging a nest in a sheltered, well-hidden part of their yard. While she was out grabbing a bite, we snooped and counted...six eggs! Six!
Yes, we are all out of our minds over this! Also concerned: how to make sure that mama stays well-nourished? What to do to protect the eggs, then the littles, against the local nuisance wildlife? It takes a village, you know.
What if the chicks were to imprint on one of out pets? Or us, even? Wouldn't that be a hoot.
Looking forward to the new arrivals, along with the other usuals: mockingbirds, cardinals, jays, finches, 'dees; even the common sparrows.
Admittedly relieved that a yellow-bellied sapsucker moved on. As beautiful as they are, they are destructive. We're far more attached to the yew tree he nearly banded than we were to him.
