Was used for sugar gliders so there is mesh covering a ~1.5 in gap at the bottom. Left it on as it makes it safer for small birds too. Bar spacing is less than 1/2in-- we bird sat a parrotlet in it. Ideal up to small conure/quaker size. Larger birds could break the bars. Missing bowls as we found other bowls easier (the bowls it came with were hard to pull out). Easy to clean, but admittedly a pain to put together-- still we did it several times.
