Stoneham Gets Creative With Town Common Bike Racks

STONEHAM, MA — New custom-designed bike racks have been installed on the Stoneham Town Common, the Community Development Corporation and town officials announced Tuesday. The whimsical, multicolored "townscape" bike racks were produced by Madrax, using a custom design submitted by Stoneham resident Filis Warren to the Bike Rack Community Design contest in fall 2018. The racks were purchased with funds from Complete Streets, donations to the CDC's community fundraising campaign and a grant from the Martin Richard Foundation in honor of Stoneham resident Jamie McDermott. They were installed earlier this month. "This fun project captures the spirit and mission of the Stoneham CDC," Joan Lemire, the organization's president, said in a statement. "We took a resident-led project and brought it to fruition. It solved a need for bike racks in this area of town, created a new piece of public art for the community and was a successful collaboration between the town of Stoneham and community volunteers. We are really grateful to all who were involved – the volunteers, the design winner, donors and the town of Stoneham." The CDC is an all-volunteer group of residents who are dedicated to increasing the community well-being by undertaking community development projects, special events and supporting long-term planning.
