Description

Visual artist Audrey Hall, recording as Harlow Willis, releases her debut EP, Bitter Taste, and companion exhibition Please join this intimate live event with "Harlow Willis" and very special guests followed by a private after party to celebrate the release of "Bitter Taste," a collection of Americana songs inflected with the edgier, more rough-and-tumble vibe of classic rock-and-roll. The EP explores a variety of intense and intimate subjects, from the death of a stepparent (“Home”) to the artist Georgia O’Keeffe’s inspirational move from New York City to Santa Fe (“Georgia”)—the songs take as its primary theme, loss, the courage it often demands, and the opportunity it affords for reinvention. Bitter Taste is a moody, genre-bending collection of songs that are rooted in the majestic terrain of the American West and Southwest, where Hall was raised. In a voice that is part Mazzy Star and part Lucinda Williams, Wills explores—in simple, direct, but arrestingly imagistic lyrics—the experience of being a woman and a female artist in this particular contemporary American landscape. Inflections of her various musical influences, from Wilco to Sun Volt to Morcheeba, can be heard, as can the musical artists who have influenced her writing: Black Lab frontman Paul Durham, Americana singer-songwriter Jeffrey Foucault, folk songbird Jessie Bridges, songwriter and vocalist Laurie Sargent, and her partner, drummer Billy Conway—all of whom have acted as teachers and guides to her, and with who she has shared a stage. Her songs evoke the spirit of independent women like O’Keeffe, the craggy sweep of her Ghost Ranch, and drives around the wide-open roads of the American West, hair flying free. Hall brings the rigor of her fine arts background to the challenges of songwriting; the result is a collection of exquisite, accessible portraits that document the vagaries of the heart. Tickets include both the live performance and after party.
