Description

Caritas A Cappella Ensemble presents the world premiere of Dan Locklair's "Sing to the World: A Choral Cycle in Five Movements" Caritas A Cappella Ensemble, under the direction of Artistic Director Cathy Youngblood, offers the World Premiere of Dan Locklair's Sing to the World: A Choral Cycle in Five Movements in Celebration of Music. The work was commissioned in 2019, but its Premiere was postponed until now due to the pandemic. It is a setting of five poems that, in one way or another, celebrate music. 1. That Music Always Round Me (Walt Whitman) lauds the emotional impact of music. 2. The Singers (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) celebrates how music so powerfully speaks to a variety of people in different ways. 3. An Hymn to the Morning (Phillis Wheatley) recounts a slave who sings in the morning to comfort fellow laborers. 4. Master of Music (Henry Van Dyke) focuses on the invisible impact of music on the human soul. 5. The Musical Ass (Tomás Iriarte) is a humorous fable of a donkey who finds fascination in a newly discovered flute, reminding us that poetry and music needn't always be serious! To further celebrate music in our lives, in particular after this period of pandemic silence, the concert will also feature music by Dan Forrest, Lloyd Pfausch, William Byrd, Gerald Finzi, Craig Carnahan, David Moore, Moses Hogan and Pärt Uusberg. Of particular interest will be Craig Courtney's Ukrainian Alleluia, sung in support of the citizens of Ukraine. Caritas partners with WDAV 89.9 FM, in gratitude for the nonprofit radio station's tireless work to promote good music in the Charlotte area.
