Stamford Health Plans To Appeal Court Ruling In Malpractice Case

STAMFORD, CT — Stamford Health said it will appeal a recent Superior Court jury verdict that orders them to pay $12.5 million to the family of a Westport man who died following a surgical procedure on his thigh in 2015. The Stamford Advocate reported that a jury found that Dr. Edward Feliciano, an orthopedic surgeon at Stamford Hospital, caused the death of Keith Gilmore, 63, by deviating "from acceptable standards of care." Gilmore should've been given blood thinners following his one-day surgery in June 2015 at the Stamford Health Tully Center to prevent against blood clots, since he was at high risk for developing them, the lawsuit claimed. The lawsuit claimed Gilmore developed a blood clot in his leg that traveled to his lung, which resulted in death, the Advocate said. "We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the Gilmore family," a spokesperson from Stamford Health told Patch in a statement. "We are disappointed with the jury's verdict which we believe is inconsistent with the evidence. We believe that there is no basis for any claim that Dr. Edward Feliciano did not provide appropriate care and we will vigorously pursue an appeal."
