ROCKVILLE, MD — Two state troopers were seated in their cars on the left shoulder of I-270 on Thursday when a driver hit both of their vehicles, Maryland State Police said.
The State Police said they received calls around 6:15 p.m. from drivers reporting what appeared to be an impaired driver heading south on I-270. The two state troopers, who are from the Rockville Barrack, went near I-270 and Montrose Road and pulled over to the left shoulder with their lights on to wait for the driver.
Kevin Junghans, who police said was the driver that callers had suspected of being impaired, was driving a 2010 Chevy Impala. He hit the parked state trooper vehicles, Maryland State Police said.
Both troopers were taken to Suburban Hospital and later released, according to a news release. Junghans, a 59-year-old from Frederick City, was also taken to Suburban Hospital. Maryland State police said charges are pending as they continue to investigate the crash. Investigators said they believe that Junghans was impaired by drugs when the crash occurred.
