Description

More than 3,000 pounds of electronic waste was collected to be properly recycled at a free E-Waste Collection Event held recently at Peter Francisco Park and BCB Bank in the Ironbound District. The event, presented in partnership by the City of Newark, the Ironbound Business Improvement District (IBID), Panasonic, Covanta, Urban Renewal Corp., and BCB Bank, made it convenient and easy for local businesses and residents to recycle electronics like old TVs, PCs and laptops, printers, small household appliances, phones, and other e-waste. "Keeping our district clean and safe is our top priority, and this annual event provides a way for local stakeholders to contribute to a cleaner environment in which to live, work and play in the Ironbound," said Seth A. Grossman, the IBID's Executive Director. "I want to recognize the important role of Brenda Anderson, Recycling and Clean Communities Coordinator for the City of Newark, and Kim Greene, Manager, Department of Public Works, who have helped make this event a success for many years. I'd also like to thank Angela Williams, Senior Aide to Mayor Ras J. Baraka, who joined us to underscore the city's commitment to community-based initiatives like our e-waste collection event." "Recycling is the process of converting waste into reusable material in order to prevent more waste. It's probably one of the most important activities we can embark on to make a positive impact in the environment and our community," added Kim Greene. "We live in a world where people are constantly changing their electronic devices every year for better and faster models generating more waste that isn't biodegradable. But what happens to all the older gadgets? They most likely end up piled up in our closets, garages, or ever worse, in our trash. This not only clutters our homes but it's also damaging for the environment." "It is estimated that 75% of old electronics are stored in households because of the unavailability of convenient recycling options. Hosting these events in each Newark Ward allows us to provide a free, safe, and easy way for residents to properly manage these materials," concluded Andrea Murphy, Manager of Panasonic's Environmental Affairs and Sustainability Team.
