Description

BOWIE, MD — Arbor Day will be celebrated Saturday in Bowie starting at 10 a.m. at Acorn Hill Park, which is located at the intersection of Stonybrook Drive and Sage Lane. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the holiday. A city of Bowie proclamation will be read followed by the memorial tree recognition and Arbor Day tree dedication. Light refreshments will be provided. According to the Arbor Day Foundation, Nebraska newspaper editor and native J. Sterling Morton appreciated trees and advocated for individuals and civic groups to plant them. Once he became secretary of the Nebraska Territory, he spread his message about the value of trees then on Jan. 4, 1872, Morton first proposed a tree-planting holiday to be called "Arbor Day" at a meeting of the state board of agriculture.
