Western Kentucky University To Recognize 3,713 Graduates During Commencement On May 5

Press release from Western Kentucky University: April 27, 2022 Western Kentucky University will celebrate 3,713 graduates, present two honorary doctorates and recognize top scholars during 2022 Commencement on May 5 at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium. WKU will confer degrees and certificates to 2,527 spring and summer 2022 graduates -- 53 associate, 1,763 bachelor's, 416 master's, 57 doctoral and 14 specialist degrees, and 170 undergraduate certificates and 54 graduate certificates. The ceremony also will honor 1,186 fall 2021 graduates whose recognition ceremonies were disrupted by December tornadoes -- 56 associate, 839 bachelor's, 153 master's, one specialist and 18 doctoral degrees, and 78 undergraduate certificates and 41 graduate certificates. Commencement will begin at 6:30 p.m. with Topper Walk along the Avenue of Champions. The ceremony will begin once students have been seated on Feix Field. During the ceremony, each college will acknowledge its graduates, and President Timothy C. Caboni will present the graduates to the Board of Regents for the conferral of degrees. WKU also will present honorary doctorates to Angela Alexander Townsend and Abraham Williams, both of Bowling Green. Townsend, a longtime educator and a 2015 inductee into the Gov. Louie B. Nunn Kentucky Teacher Hall of Fame, will receive an honorary doctorate of humanities. Williams, executive director of the Housing Authority of Bowling Green who has partnered with WKU on numerous projects, will receive an honorary doctorate of public service. The ceremony will include remarks from President Caboni; recognition of honor graduates and award winners -- Zena Pare of Alvaton (fall 2021) and Nicholas Barth of Alvaton (spring 2022) as the Ogden Foundation Scholars (top undergraduate award) and Ahmet Kaan Aydin of Istanbul, Turkey, as the John D. Minton Award recipient (top graduate award); and the commissioning of WKU ROTC cadets. The ceremony will be broadcast by WKU PBS and will be streamed on WKU's YouTube and Facebook pages. The Commencement celebration will conclude with The Big Red Bash on the South Lawn, featuring the Music City Sound, a celebratory toast, food vendors and fireworks. The ceremony schedule is: College of Health and Human Services, 8 a.m.; Potter College of Arts & Letters, 10:30 a.m.; Ogden College of Science and Engineering, 1 p.m.; College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, 3:30 p.m.; and Gordon Ford College of Business, 6 p.m. WKU is expecting heavy traffic throughout the day.
