LAKE FOREST, CA — More than 13.2 tons of bulky waste were collected at the City of Lake Forest's "Dump Day," a public-private effort held April 23 at Saddleback Church to coincide with Earth Day, according to organizers. Another 1.95 tons of items also were taken in by Goodwill of Orange County and the church for those in need. "It was great to see so many agencies come together to accomplish so much," said Lake Forest Mayor Robert Pequeno. "Residents were able to properly get bulky items out of their homes and garages, and Goodwill and Saddleback Church were able to collect the items that are still usable for people who need them." The Dump Day event aimed to further Caltrans' goal of keeping California highways litter-free as part of the Clean California initiative – Governor Newsom's $1.1 billion multi-year investment to clean up and beautify California, officials said. The collaborative effort, free to residents, involved the city, Caltrans, O.C. Goodwill, Clean California, Saddleback Church, CR&R Inc. and state Senator Dave Min (D-37). "It is in this spirit of collaboration that we are reminded of the importance of being good stewards of our planet as we celebrate Earth Day and good neighbors to those empowered by Goodwill's life-changing programs," Min said. The items collected by Goodwill will be resold in its thrift stores countywide or via its online shopping site, ShopGoodwill.com. "Every donation is kept out of the trash, given a second life either in our stores or through our recycling programs, and supports Goodwill's Workforce Development and Disabilities Services programs," said Vanessa Banuelos-Dawson, Goodwill of O.C. donations and sustainability manager. "Not a bad second act for your old couch or desk!" ------------ IN OTHER AREA NEWS: Mother's Day Brunch & Dinner 2022: Orange County Restaurant SpecialsAcclaimed Chef To Open Upscale Seafood Restaurant In Dana Point5 Orange County Teens Are Finalists In Music Center LA CompetitionDave's Hot Chicken Opens In Seal Beach - With Sliding-Heat-Scale MenuNewport Beach Garden Tour Tickets On Sale: Virtual for 2022Goodwill Of O.C.
