STILLWATER, MN — Municipalities throughout the U.S. are set to participate Saturday in National Drug Take Back Day, including Stillwater. National Drug Take Back Day, sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency, urges residents to safely dispose of unused, unneeded and expired prescription drugs at community events with local police. World Tai Chi Day Event In Stillwater To Raise Money For Ukraine The DEA sponsors two national Drug Take Back Days each year. The first event was held in September 2010. The annual event has collected more than 15 million pounds of prescription drugs since, according to the DEA. There are many medication drop-off sites in the Stillwater area, according to the DEA and Washington County officials. Old and unused prescriptions pose a risk for accidental poisoning and drug abuse if left around the house, according to Washington County officials. "Properly disposing of prescription medication, such as opioids, can significantly decrease the likelihood of individuals having access to these highly addictive drugs." It can also be harmful to discard prescription drugs into the water system or landfills, as they can pollute groundwater and harm fish and wildlife, officials said.
