Description

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month in May, the Y will be presenting a Y.E.S. (YMCA Educational Series) talk on Tuesday, May 3 from 11 – 12pm. Presenter Holly Kim, the first Korean-American woman elected in Illinois, will discuss her family's history dating back to the story of her great-grandmother who was a soldier in the Korean rebellion with Kim Woo. Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month recognizes the contributions and influences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. The AAPI umbrella term includes cultures from the entire Asian continent—including East, Southeast and South Asia—and the Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Kim's presentation will highlight how she learned to maneuver Korean vs. American cultures; being true to one's heritage; and mental health tips. She will also discuss what attributes it took to be elected in the state of Illinois. This event is sponsored by the NSYMCA Committee for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI), and the YMCA Education Series (YES), and will recognize the achievements and history of Asian Americans.
